What is the significance of 21 days? Experience has shown that in this time frame most people can completely change their lives by forming new habits and break old habits. Our lives are a series of habits from the time we get up in the morning and have our coffee, two sugars and one cream, until we head to bed at night walking thru our house turning off all the lights and checking the door locks. They are all little habits we have developed.
Habit Forming - Good Habits
What exactly is a habit? It is a custom, a pattern, a modus operandi that we involuntarily follow day after day. An unvarying method or procedure typically followed rigorously without thought and with little or no effort. Websters.com defines a habit as “an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary: the habit of looking both ways before crossing the street.”
A habit can be either good or bad depending on the person and the behavior in question. Like the example given above by Webster’s a habit or pattern can be something that prevents us from being injured or even killed in our everyday lives. A habit can help you achieve the results you desire. There is however patterns that do not benefit us at all and may even cut into the quality of life that we live. Some may even seem so overwhelming that it’s hard to imagine living life without performing these actions. Maybe it is waking up in the morning and reaching for that first cigarette or having that sugar filled soda with our lunch instead of a healthy option such as water or juice.
There is a blog here on the web that I personally found inspiring and would like to take a moment and share with you. The story told on this blog is about Jess, a 28 year old English Professor and self proclaimed sugar addict from Florida. Now I don’t know Jess and have never spoke with her but her success stands out in my mind when I think about how others have succeeded when putting a 21 day action plan in place with defined goals. This is exactly what we are going to teach you, how to develop achievable goals and put an action plan in place to reach those goals. Jess set out to develop a good habit; she wanted to run for health and made it a point to do it every day for 21 days. Now, nearly two years later she has developed a passion for running and has taken part in numerous organized events. If you knew up front that by taking a specific action for 21 days, three short weeks that it would change your life forever would you do it?
Most of these things that are negative habits we probably don’t even perceive as being so and continue to do them day after day, month after month, until they are just a part of our being. Others are obvious such as smoking or drinking too much while some seem to be not so much habit but behaviors. Perhaps you put off paying your bills not from lack of money to do so or you avoid taking your car in for that long overdue oil change. It may seem it is because you just don’t enjoy doing these things but in reality it is because you have developed the habit of putting it off.
It is usually the long term effects of our patterns that cause the most damage and prevent us from living with the happiness we all deserve. This is part of the psychological reasoning that makes bad behavior so easy to learn. If we immediately developed lung cancer from lighting up that stogie or knew the engine in our car go up in smoke a few miles after skipping that scheduled oil change would we really light up or drive past the Jiffy lube? I think most reasonable folks out there would agree that we wouldn’t, that we would do the right thing. It is because the long term effects are not felt right away from our behavior we learn to develop a method of disassociation.
