Sams Teach Yourself Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 5 in 21 Days
This guide targets users who want a classroom approach to learning Adobe Photoshop 5 but need a good overview of the basics. The book assumes that you don't have much time to learn the program. You can study the 21 lessons, which build upon one another, over any length of time you'd like. Lessons include instructions on and discussions of a variety of essential tasks, lesson summaries, quizzes, and suggested workshop activities. The book targets both Windows and Macintosh users. Your first seven days are devoted to the very basic elements of Photoshop: you learn the interface; set preferences; find out what's new in version 5; import, export, save, and print files; choose file formats; and calibrate your monitor. In the second seven days, you learn the various editing features, such as the toning, focus, and stamp tools, and you create selections and define paths. You also use the painting and drawing tools and work with layer masks, quick masks, layering and layer modes, channels, and type tools. In the third seven-day chunk of lessons, you apply built-in filters and learn about third-party filters. You work with color-adjustment tools and photo-retouching and -repairing techniques. You also use Actions, create composite images, and apply a variety of special effects. Finally, you learn how to fine-tune and output your images for the Web. A full-color section shows the results of selecting various filters and color-adjustment options. Appendices list keyboard shortcuts, tool documentation, and troubleshooting advice. The accompanying CD-ROM includes project files for the book's exercises and sample images, filters, and fonts. --Kathleen Caster
